USB cruzer dosen't work in computer

I had to reinstall XP home in a friends computer and I went to use the USB drive and it wasn't seen in my computer (with the other drives). When I put the USB in the comp says new h/W then just stops after a few minutes and sees nothing. When I put the USB drive in the light comes on the drive but nothing happens. He has a HP printer that is connected through USB port.I use this USB drive on 3 other computers.
