Hi all,

Just got a brand new 320gig (#2) sata drive, I already have one 80 (#1) gig installed. My mobo (A8V Deluxe) has two sets of Sata Raid slots.

-Now when I replace #1 by #2 , I get a Hardware intitiate error at boot up
-When I leave #1 in its usual slot Raid 1_1 and plug in #2 in Raid 1_2 I get the same error.

Yields the same results if I try with Raid 2

-If I leave #1 in Raid 1_1 and plug #2 in Raid 2_1 I am prompted to go in the Promise menu to set up an array, in this menu my HD is clearly recognise.

If I don't create an array my system boots as usual but my drive is nowhere to be found in XP.

My only option left is to create an array but that's not really what I want to do. I just need to transfer data from #1 to #2 and throw away #1.

Any thoughts

Thanks

If your drive is seen in the BIOS boot screen but not in Windows that is normal till you get into the control panel of XP and go to Administrative Tools, once there look for Drive Managment. Here in Drive Management you should see your new drive but without a drive letter. Here you will need to mount the drive and assign a drive letter to the drive and format it. Once this is all done then you will see your new drive in My Computer.

Hi Stoner,

Nope, I don't see my unformatted drive in the Disk Management window. The only place that shows it is in the Promise menu at start up (before XP loads), there it is recognized.

anything else?

Thanks

Problem solved, my second drive is a sata 2 drive so I had to put in a jumper.

An interesting fact I found out while solving this issue was that how you plug the drives in the mobo has to match the order you plugged them with the sata power cable.
