Hi,

I'm new to over clocking but I'll do my best to explain my problem and system specifications.

I'm using an S-Series 965P-DS3P GIGANYTE motherboard with Intel 6400 CPU @ 2.13Ghz, 2GB XMS Duel channel 667 memory, and a NVIDIA 7950 GFX card.

I restart the computer and enter BIOS to over clock my system. The FSB by default is @ 266 and I raise it to 333 to achieve 2.66Ghz. I set the System Memory Multiplier (SPD) to 2:0 (1:1 ratio) and set the PCI-E @ 100.

Once the system reboots after making the changes it works well but after shutting down my computer and starting it up again it goes horrible slow losing about 50% of it's power almost as if it's under clocking itself for some reason. I checked the temperatures using Speed Fan and all temperatures are normal with CPU's ranging 50-65 and GFX averaging 55-80 C depending on the work load.

Does anyone have any idea why my system won't over clock once shutting the system down?

Any help is appreciated!

Regards
- Alex

EDIT: Forgot to add that my PSU is 350w.

make sure you have speed step disabled.

Quote from another site:
"When you start to use the processor again it will increase the voltage and raise the multiplier back up to its original value"

Are there any dis-advantages to doing this and is there anything else I should consider changing so I don't damage any of my hardware?

as far as i know theres no disadvantage and wont damage your hardware, all speed step does in turn down ur CPUs freq when ur idle and turns is back up when u start to do something. Power saving feature really.

thats how i understand it anyway :)

Cool, thanks for your help :)

I just had one more question. What does C.I.A.2 do and is it worth enabling?

Not really 100% clue'd up on this, thnk its a gigabyte thing, however if ur overclocking may b best to disable it. perhaps a visit to the gigabyte website and search CIA2

I started up my computer this morning and the problem has returned! :(

Do I need to disable "speed step" in the BIOS as well? What is the speed step entry in the BIOS look like?

I disabled speed step in the BIOS but this morning I got up and I still have this problem where my system is under clocking itself! Can someone please help me?

I'm not sure what all they might be called, but most all of the CPU special functions might best be turned off during overclocking. Once you get the overclock stable try turning them on and see if it works, but I think it is possible for things like EIST to interfere with OCing.

So... wherever you found the speedstep option in BIOS try looking at the other available settings, recording their names and googleing them to see what they are and what they do. Features like EIST or C1e should be turned off while adjusting your OC. CPU thermal controls are best left on, in my opinion, as they can help gauge temps more accurately.

Before you go and take my advice you should always do some research for yourself. You will feel a lot more comfortable if you learn how these things work yourself :) Study your BIOS and if you don't understand something google it... or hit the forums like your doing!

I found EIST and disabled it. I won't know until the morning if it has worked or not.

I took note of my tweaked section and what I had things set to. I also followed the guide and was not able to find many of the options it suggested to enable or disable.

Here are my settings from the tweaked section of my BIOS. I hope some of you can make suggestions if something is wrong.

Robust Graphics Booster [Auto]
CPU clock ratio [8x]
CPU host clock control [Enabled]
CPU host frequency(Mhz) [333]
PCI Express frequency(Mhz) [100]
C.I.A.2 [Disabled]
System memory multiplier(SPD) [2.00]
Memory frequency(Mhz) 667 667
High Speed DRAM DLL Settings [Option 1]
***** System Voltage Optimized *****
System voltage control [Auto]
DDR2 Over Voltage [Auto]
PCI-E Over Voltage Normal
(G) MCH Over Valtage Control Normal
FSB Over Valtage Control Normal
CPU Voltage Control Normal
Normal CPU Vcore 1.31250V

Here are some things the guide said to enable/disable that I could either find or not... My friend commented that my BIOS look different to most :(

C1E - Disable (found)
EIST - Disable (found)
Max CPUID Value limit - Disable (found)
Vanderpool - Disable (not found)
CPU TM Function - Enable (not found)
Execite Dosable Bit - Enable (not found)
PECI - Enable (not found)
Memroy testing 5-5-5-15 or 4-4-4-12 (I don't where to find this info it was no where in the BIOS)
AI Tuning - manual (not found)
PCI clock synchroniztion 33.33 Mhz (not found)
Spred Spectrum - Disable (not found)

As you can see I got some problems because my BIOS seems to have none of this stuff :(
