My DSL line is located upstairs in my home. However, I use my laptop in the other end of our home. I need to keep one wireless router upstairs but I'm wondering if I can connect a second wireless router and locate it closer to the other end of the house for better reception on my laptop.

I'm using a Linksys G router currently. My signal where I use the laptop downstairs is 5.5 Mbps and it does lose signal occasionally.

I'm somewhat technically challenged so please excuse any stupid assumptions I may be making. Thanks for any suggestions.

You can't run more than one modem/router on the same phone line.

If you're lucky your Linksys stuff will support WDS (Wireless Distribution) and allow you to link the second router by wireless but this isn't standard on domestic equipment.

So you may have to purchase a range extender product. I'd stick to the Linksys brand and get guidance from a decent dealer (or Linksys home site's user forum).

Alternative is to extend the range of the first router by linking the second via ethernet cable. This example from Netgear shows the principal http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/965
