Ok I've been reading up a lot on GPU's and such and I keep hearing about direct x 10.1 and if the 8800GT will support it and that some ATI card does. What is the benefit of 10.1 anyway? 10 haven’t even been heavily utilized yet, right? Anyone care to enlighten us on what Dx10.1 is all about?

More about : direct

You mean whats the difference between .1? Its so small it will be hard to tell the difference and the fact that most game makers will support what hardware is out there and not what isn't out there. It will be a year before games makers make that learning curve and churn out all those DX10.1 games. By that time I will have already upgraded to a better graphics card, its not hard for some to keep up with the Jones.

DX 10.1 doesnt harm to have, but its nothing earth shattering and will take time before we will see it implemented in games. Initialy it was expected it will have tesselation (pretty big thing for better quality graphics without much stress on hardware), but was droped, probably because nvidia wasnt ready for it. No Geforces have support for 10.1 as of today, including 8800GT.

I wouldnt let it worry you it not earth shattering very slight differance and we only just have propper DX10 games coming out so i cant see anyone rushing to make DX10.1 games.
As far as tesssilation goes ATI had a dedicated unit on the R600 cards(2900)but that also is awaiting support from games programers.

By the time DX10.1 is popularly implemented, all the current cards will be obsolete by then

So true, if you need to upgrade you GPU then do it and enjoy it, rather than wait painfully.

The new ATI R670 is on its way out with 10.1 support in about 2weeks .I believe 4xAA is standard with it .The 8800gt will not have Directx 10.1 and there for not future proof if thats what you are looking for,any in 2weeks

Too bad it'll be at the very least a year until a game comes out supporting Direct X10.1 features like Tessellation.

99% sure the 8800GT will not have 10.1
Crysis will also not have 10.1 - so currently not a big deal.
just my 2 cents.

Have you read everyone's post? You seem to have missed some major points on the difference between DX10/DX10.1. Theres not that big a difference and most game makers aren't coding for it yet. I would quit needlessly worrying about those that will own a DX10 card, frankly on Nov 1st could care less about DX10.1 for at least a year. Too many worry warts.
