Hi all,

I'm trying to do a high quality budget build. It will be for gaming. QW:ET and whatever else this winter until Age of Conan and Warhammer arrive. Phenom doesn't look too much better than Core 2 so I'm not going to wait 3 or 4 months to get gaming...this p4 has got to go!
What I have is as follows...

COOLER MASTER Centurion 534 RC-534-KKN2-GP Black Aluminum & Mesh bezel / SECC Chassis ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - Retail

SILVERSTONE SST-ST56ZF ATX12V / EPS12V 560Watts Power Supply - Retail

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ Windsor 2.4GHz Socket AM2 Processor Model ADA4600CUBOX - Retail

Total = $609.92 US Dollars

My question pertains to my choice of processor. The Gigabyte board appears to be the best choice at 75 dollars for 5 eggs and full atx.

Does anyone have experience overclocking a 4600+? Do you think I could make 2.8ghz with it (stock 2.4ghz 12x multi) which means bringing the FSB to 233?

If not perhaps I'm better off buying a 5600+ (2.8ghz 1mb) and just trying to inch it as close to 3.2ghz as possible?

Also the 65 Watt 4600+ (Windsor not Brisbane) is only a dollar more so I would be interested in it if it can overclock as well.

Let me know what you think or know as the 4600+ is extremely attractive at 90 dollars.

I realize Intel can provide a much more powerful solution if successfully overclocked but I really want to throw my money to the underdog right now since this system only needs to last up to 2 years. Then I will be ready to go ddr3/low priced nehalem generation. So please no Intel suggestions (I know they can be better).

As for the video card it is intended to hold me until march (AoC release). At that point I will see how it runs and look at how 8800s/9X00s are priced then. Let me know if anyone has a better idea. My monitor by the way is 19inch lcd maxed at 1280x1024 and I don't mind playing at 1024x768 with 2x aa.

Thanks for the help guys I look forward to your thoughts!

AM2 overclockers would be crazy to not drool over:

I'm an Intel fan. I'm tempted. Black has unlocked multipliers. It goes as high as 3.5ghz. I'd have to spend hundreds for an unlocked extreme cpu. However, the 5000+ black doesn't come with a fan. You need one.

If you plan on o/cing AM2, get either of these:

7025 is a tiny bit better in terms of o/c'ing. 7050 has an HDMI adapter out of the box. 690G is meh. Not as good an o/c'er.

Just disable the onboard video & use your pci-e card.

BTW, AMD just cut chip prices starting yesterday.
