...I'm not surprised at all. The fair pricing we've enjoyed from Intel lately was only temporary, and I think most of us knew it. Yet, I remain dissapointed. I hope AMD can truly compete soon, or this is just the beginning. 50%...seems steep to me, but you well-to-do folks out there might not even notice.

um that artical makes no sense at all. it says a 50 percent premium for an EXTREME CPU at $999. all extreme cpus are right around that price range and have been there for quite some time.

Perhaps I'm reading this incorrectly. I read "...that next year's Core 2 Extreme processors will cost up to 50 per cent more than today's models". ...not November's pricing, November's pricing is no cause for alarm, as it hasn't changed much, if at all.

those "next year" extremes arent even socket 775. those are the 771s for intels skulltrail. those are the only chips that have that insane price. even though IMO all the extremes are priced high.

but everything about skulltrail has a HUGE price premium.

not just this novembers pricing is no cause for alarm. all of the up coming chips are priced decent except for the socket 771s.

look at the price for this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6819117040

$2.5K. Wow. I know you pay a premium for the best a company has to offer. I've got this fear that now that Intel has finally put out some high quality processors at decent prices...in order to "get back into the game", that they're going to get ready to rape us...okay, that's not the best vernacular to use but it concisely articulates my point. :pfff: I'll keep my fingers crossed that they keep the bulk of what consumers want at a reasonable price for the foreseeable future? If not, then perhaps AMD would have a chance to shine again? Stated politically correct enough?

I'll stick to AMD, the Japaneses sports car, the Mazda RX-8, good looking enough to pick up an Italian model, fast enough to dis the kid in his mommies M3, and cheap enough for you to keep taking that model out for a long long time

I like that analogy, but its hard to beat Intel, right this minute, for performance/price. I hope AMD really, really offers some serious competition to at least help keep Intel on the leash. For now, I'm an Intel user, but I am not loyal at all, by any stretch, if AMD beats them in performance/price then I'd be quick to pick up some AMD products again (notice I didn't write "price/performance", performance is unfortunately more important than price for this sick enthusiast :-).

I don't see why those prices are perceived an an increase. The sweet spot in the market right now is the q6600 and the penryn q9300 at 2.5 vs. the q6600@2.4 is coming in at a comparable price. This is a great price considering the q6600 just dropped from over $500.00 back in July. This would support that Penryn is launching at the best prices yet for a quad core in terms of performance/$.

I've just updated my BIOS in preparation for Penryn and I'll be able to buy in for probably less than I paid for my E6600 in December 06. If I can think of a time when prices were being driven up it was not so long ago that an x2 4800 was an $800.00 proc. when Intel had nothing to compete.
