i just bought a 22" LCD and i was wondering if you guys had any tips on how to properly maintain my monitor? my old monitor lasted me only about 3-4 years, so i want this one to last it's full age. other than the basic stuff (such as keeping it ventilated, away from magnets and such), can you guys suggest anything?

and also, what cloth should i use to clean it? if it was a CRT i'd just wipe it with a cotton cloth, but i don't know about LCDs. in the manual it just says "use a soft cloth".

U gotta treat them right.
Buy them flowers, take them to dinner, shag them sensless... doggy style, grab her hair, shout her sisters name and see how long u can hold on for!

Apart from that... make sure u set 'turn off monitor' to someething like 10-20 minutes, avoid exposure to sunlight, clean with water and a rag.

Apart from that who cares really :p

I just use a soft paper towl with some windex, or even an old white t-shirt. Best time to clean them is when not powered on.

Never use Windex on an LCD, it is NOT Glass! No Amonia or any other solvents. As mrmez said, water and a soft cloth.

The best thing to clean an LCD with is the softest most lint free thing you can find. Use Distilled water by applying the water to the cloth. Turn the LCD off and clean with gentle wiping. Don't push real hard. The Distilled water will dry streak free since it has no impurites in it, and no hard minerals.

I actually used to get good results on people notebooks at work with alcohol in a can and a soft cloth. But the notebooks do have that shiny sort of coating on them.

To my knowledge water is not good for them either. LCD's are porous and therefore soak up anything that is put on them, hence why windex and other cleaners are particularily bad. Id suggest a very soft cloth, if there is a mark on the panel oh so very slightly dampen cloth. Dont touch the god damn thing cause grease of your fingers and wot not will soak in and wont come off.

In general if you keep them clean regularily you wont have a problem, if something is left on them for a period of time you wont get it off.

There are "special" screen cleaners for notebook and LCD screens. The stuff is Ammonia free and suggested for usage by some brands.

I use an old, 100% cotton T-shirt (makes it soft and lint free) and isopropyl alcohol. Do not use rubbing alcohol. It has lanolin in it an will leave a film.

Having a photography background... JSC is totally correct on the 'old cotton t-shirt' idea.
Its the ONLY thing i use for cleaning lenses.
And guys... WTF are you doing with your LCD's that u need to clean them so well?
The most mine get are a bit dusty :/

When u wank... use the keyboard instead kk?

Never use alcohol on any plastics, it will craze many plastics. Once the plastics are crazed they are destroyed. If you want to be paranoid Google "plasma screen cleaner", otherwise choose a mild plastic safe cleaner and use it. But never use alcohol, acetone or any other harsh chemical or you may be sorry.

Most manufacturers have a cleaning recommendation on their website somewhere.

Sony recommends a 50% alcohol solution on a soft, lint free cloth. Works for me, keeps my Dell 24" looking new after over 2 years. For cloths, I recommend cloth diapers, if you can find some, next best thing would be an old 100% cotton tee shirt.

(Same solution also does a fine job on my razor 5, as well as my desktop mousing area. Its as slick as glass after a good clean.)

I suggest sulphuric acid, it really gets that caked in dirt off nicely, remember to buy the concentrated stuff only, none of that dilute rubbish, and if you can get hold of some HI then use that, and make sure you use a LOT.

Acetone is good for cleaning plastic too so you should use litres of that if you get anything on the plastic around the screen.

;)

Or you could just keep your grubby mits off your screen, that might work. I *hate* people touching my screen.

Seriously i think it is best to just avoid touching it and if you DO get anything on it use a soft cotton cloth like the ones they give you with glasses and don't use any solvents at all, you just have to rub it gently for a long time and you will get it all off eventually.

Damp, soft cloth. Wipe in straight lines from side to side/up/down. Old T shirts work nicely
