elite2005 :
Ok i may not be updated well in the cpu department but last year when i built my rig, i had gotten a core 2 duo e6400, and now i see these diff numbers and quads and what not. Basically watever happened to the 6400,6600's etcs? And how do they compare now to the ones that are currently out?
To understand the numbers:
E6300 1.8ghz 2MB L2
E6320 1.8ghz 4MB L2
E6400 2.13ghz 2MB L2
E6420 2.13ghz 4MB L2
Those are still on the rated FSB 1066mhz. The E6300 and E6400 are being fazed out, and being replaced by the E6320-E6420.
Q6600 is a quad core, but still runs on a rated FSB of 1066.
The other: E6650-6850 have a faster FSB of 1333mhz.
So the E6320 and E6420 just have more L2 cache that will improve only on certain apps for about 3 to 5 percent gain, if I remember correctly.
As far as the unlock mulitplier, to go above the stock multiplier, it has to be the extreme edition CPU, from what I understand. All the others are unlocked going down, so for example if your stock is 10 (like my E4400), you can go down to a mulit of 6 for speed step to conserve power.
