I have a 320 Gb Hdd I want to partition and install 64 bit Vista on. I was going to set it up like this description I got off of another site if it's a good way to do it.

"The first partition contains the operating system and application software, the second is designated for user data (documents, photos, music, game saves, etc.)and the third acts as a repository for drive images of the first two partitions. You create images of the first two partitions on the third, ensuring that you always have a current image of your OS and applications, as well as your critical data."

Assuming this is a good way to do it, How big should each partition be? To be clear what they meant in the above quote was that on the first partition you put your OS, software, programs, apps and games. On the second you put everything personal or like they said user data. The third is both partitions the first and second put together. Please clarify what should go where or what the above quote was talking about.

One final thing, How do you make the third partition have what's on the first two and stay current? What I mean is, lets say I set it up and save a word document to the second partition. How would that document get to the third partition without me having to save it twice in two different locations? I assume there is some way or some app to make the third partition just update itself automatically to copy the other two partitions?

I tried to explain it the best I could and I would be glad to try another way if there is something you don't understand. I know this is quite lengthy and I appreciate you taking the time to read this and/or help. Thanks.

You use the third partition to store scheduled backups of the other 2. Like say you want to backup every friday night or somehing. You use a backup software and set it up and it will do it all on its own. Vista ultimate has nice backup utility built in. Another nice one is Arconis True Image Home.

I see, so for the most part did I understand correctly about where everything should be saved?

You could also get another HDD and use that for data and backup.
