hey guys. im building my first rig and i have have fnially received my last couple parts. today im starting to put it together but im already alittle confused. i was getting ready to put my motherboard in place and so i started putting the stand-offs in place on the mobo tray. now i realized that there are alot more holes than screws provided. am i supposed to just support the corners? also, my biggest concern is how to screw the mobo in. i know i must obviously use the holes on the corners, but there are other holes in the mobo that have metal dots surrounding them. what are these holes for? i was originally going to leave them alone but then i started thinking maybe they were used for ground. this is embarassing but i could really use some help. i'm sure ill have more questions once i get this part done so stay tuned :-) thanks for the help

Put a brass standoff and a screw for each mounting hole in your MB (probably 9 mounting holes in your MB). If you fail to fasten the center holes of the MB to the tray, when you push your video card and RAM into place the MB will be loose under the pressure. HTH.

yes that does help because my mobo has 9 holes including those with the metal dots. the only problem now is that most of those holes dont match up with the tray :( actually none of them do other than the holes on the 4 corners. should i put the standoffs in anyway or could that cause a short if it touches something it shouldnt?

It is possible you have a Micro MB only case/tray and a full ATX MB. If a brass standoff won't match up, you will need a plastic standoff at the holes that don't match. Usually a few plastic 'bumper' standoffs are included with the case. If you have an ATX case and an ATX MB the nine holes of the MB will match the MB tray of the case.

well the mobo is definitely ATX and the case says it supports ATX and micro ATX. unfortunately they didnt send any bumpers with the case. does this mean i have to wait and go buy some bumpers or just install it with the 4 screws? i already installed the memory on a foam cushion that came with the mobo so that it would damage the leads underneath and i can do the same thing with the graphics card.

nevermind.. i just found the problem.. the tray has extra holes for bigger mobos and i was originally lining up against those... thanks for your help

Match the MB to the I/O shield it came with.

yea i never realized that once i push the mobo up against the shield, there would be extra holes on the outside that could be ignored.. there are still a couple of screws missing in the mobo but its well supported on the ends and in the middle. thanks for your help

If you attach the front panel connectors from the front of the case to the MB headers before you screw down the MB onto the tray it makes that part of installation much easier.

While you are at it, mount the CPU and heat sink outside of the case. That way, you can look at the back of the mobo to be certain that the cooler push pins are all the way through the mobo.

Put the RAM in too. I remember I had to remount my heatsink because the RAM was a tight fit in underneath it. 5mm clearance :ange:

After you have the chip, RAM and heatsink all fitted to the motherboard, install the casefans, then lift the motherboard ensemblage into the case. Screw it in, hook up the case headers, usb, power, reset buttons, LEDs etc, add the cards, VGA and then tidy up the cables. I prefer to wire up the headers before putting the cards in so I can run the cables under the small gaps. Tidy, you know?
