i headed over to one of the biggest computer markets in india here in mumbai.this place has almost everything the day its launched in the us/europe/south east asia.
i wanted to buy the 8800gt .one shop said he sold a couple of 8800gt cards made by galaxy(singaporean brand).i was looking for the xfx alpha dog 8800gt card.
most guys said the card hadn't shipped yet and would arrive only on thursday/friday this week.
i headed over to one shop and the guy said he could get me the card for 9200rs(230 US $). i asked him to show me the card.
he got some unbranded card with something scribbled in chinese on it.
the card was shorter in length than the standard cards, had no extra pci-e power connector, but the barcode stickers behind said it was a 8800gt 512mb
i took some snaps of it (sorry for the bad quality images-took it on my mobile-vga camera)
the guy @ the shop told me he sold 3 of these cards and a quite a lot of people were enquiring about the 8800gt.

the writing on the barcode isnt that clear (vga camera to be blamed)
but u can clearly make out the 8800gt on it and 512mb written beside it.

8800gt uses 2 DVI ports no?

Reply to NUFC987

Thats most likely an 8400/8500 card if its a 8xxx series card at all... notice the small HSF and VGA outputs

is there any serial numbers on the PCB its self?

In anycase its defintally NOT an 8800gt

yep thats fake alright...
some low end card as you said, small heatsink, vga connector and no SLI connector nor extra power connector

If that bastard peel off the 8800GT label and put it on a 8400GS card, then did he put the label of a 8400GS onto a 8800GT card? :D

Reply to lp231

He took the 8400GS out of his own system, switched the stickers, put the 8800GT back in his box and is now waiting for sucker v2.089345u to buy the relabled POS.

Hmmm.... Mumbai has an actual computer market? Like, not just buying stuff online, but in stores and for suggested MSRP?

I already liked India, now I have another reason to travel there (other than food and business).

Reply to scryer_360

That's not even an 8000 series. Notice the fan. The Nvidia label's the old one, not the new icon they came out with last year.

Well, the old saying is true... if it sounds too good to be true it probably is. Thanks for posting the pictures. I'm sure plenty of people will be keeping an eye out for things like that now.

Reply to rodney_ws

My guess is 7300 or 7600 series.

Man, that 8800gt looks totally legit, roflllllll lol

Heh, maybe it's an old 4200TI?

If the store own lets you take pictures of it, then it's either.
1. He's a victim also. Meaning he does not know if that is actually a real 8800GT card.
And some person who returned it swamped the labels.

2. He does not want to act suspicious so he's got no choice but to let you
take the snapshots.

If number 1 is true then I hope the baboon who did it get his card fried.

yeah I looked at a couple of other cards trying to match up the capacitors... doesnt look like a 8xxx series or a 7 series...

it is pcie though...so it cant be that old.
Defintally can not be a 7300.. those are low profile cards... my guess would be a 7600gs

I thought it looked like a 4 or 5 series as well, but the PCI-E connector says different....

Probably 7600GS. The things that popped to mind were some of the PCX FX-series cards, 6600s, 7600s or 8500s.

Reply to Gravemind123

the card has no sli at all so it has to be a 7200gs

Man, that would be something to think you're getting an 8800gt, one of the best cards on the market, and instead get a 7200, one of the worst :D

Reply to jt001

probably a low end 7 series... 7300gs or that end of the scope. It looks less like an 8 series than the 8400 does

EDIT: ok maybe not a 7300

yep! there's this place in south mumbai called lamington road--its a long street and buildings on both sides have shops which sell computer hardware/software.you've got warehouses and these supply parts to most of the other towns/cities in india.the thing is the prices here are almost identical and in some cases cheaper than what you guys pay for on newegg. example i got my dual core opteron 175 for 6000rs(about 150 US $) in april earlier this year.now its 154.99us $ on newegg but its something like 190 $ in april when i saw it.
you can also bargain--haggle the old fashioned way in a shop!! the basic price for any product is fixed on the basis of its demand and supply in the market.for example--some shop might sell you the seagate baracudda sata 2 harddrive-160gb for 2000rs(50 US $) some shop may sell it to you for 1900rs and somewhere you may get it for 2200rs.if you drop into a couple of shops before actually buying the harddrive - you can actually bargain -i got my seagate baracudda for 1900rs(47.5 US $--its 55$ on newegg)

the shopkeeper said he sold three of them for about 230$ and of all the shops i could go to b4 i got dead tired this was the only shop that had 8800gt--the fake ones in stock.the other shops were expecting the 8800gt cards in bulk on friday this week.
he didnt know anything about how the 8800gt looked - and the box that he got the card out of looked exactly like a XFX box-remember those xfx defenders of the gaming universe boxes?(like one inverted triangle placed over another triangle) the nvidia 6XXX series box-with the monster from doom 3--the hell knight--and then all that was written on the box was in chinese-inside the box u had these s-video cables and the driver cd and some manual -completely in chinese.
the good thing about the shops in mumbai's lamington road--they let you actually fiddle around with the hardware they do have hardware that's lose and you actually get to look at it properly before you order your stuff which is in a sealed box.
when it comes to video cards--the largest selling brand is xfx, then you have this singaporean brand galaxy, then u have leadtek, and then msi, gigabyte and asus sell the most--but this is the case with the big shops where the shopkeepers know exactly what they are selling and their knowledge about the products they sell is really good.for example when i went to help a friend buy his 19 inch viewsonic lcd -the bigger shops said that the batch of lcd from viewsonic made in the period of april -2007 to august2007 had a high rate of failure and they suggested us to buy anything other than the viewsonic--some shops promoted the acer, some said samsung was a better choice, some said Lg would be the best.its the smaller and lesser known shops that often stock theslesser known chinese brands which give u a certain product but then its way cheaper than the other well known stuff.for example some smaller shops have nvidia cards made by palit, horizon, manli,BIG(some imitation of BFG) and loads of other brands.and these have manuals in chinese and not english.
