Hi there
I'm hoping I you guys could help me with a hookup. I have my desktop pc hooked via ethernethttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethernet DSLhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_subscriber_line box from the phone company and I am purchasing a used Compaq Presariohttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compaq_Presario 2100 laptop to also use in my home. Now i am really anewbie on this....can I split the connection to hookup my DSL and the PC at the same time or how can i get my laptop wireless. No one around me has wireless connections in the neighborhood. Trying to do this as lesse expensive as possible. Your help will be appreciated.

Do you have a modem? Look at the back of it. Are there any duplicate Ethernet ports? Some modems have built-in routers that can hook up to multiple PCs or a LAN.

If not, you'll need a router. A wireless one is the best for laptops so you can move around. You don't need $100. $50 or less can buy a good wireless router. Look for 802.11g. Dlink, Linksys, Belkin are a few good brands. Also, your laptop needs a wireless 802.11g card. Can be had for $20 or less. Avoid chain stores unless it's on sale. After you get it, post back.

the used laptop came with a card. It is a Belkin Wireless G PLUS MIMO Notebook card G+MIMO. Model F5D9010. I don't know how old the card is, but should I get the Belkin router to match or does it matter?

no you dont need a belkin model router. pretty much any wireless g router or n router with backwards compatibility for b/g will work.
