I am trying to copy many files to a dvd, but it keeps telling me there is no
disc in the drive and asking me to insert a CD when I've actually inserted a
DVD.

Thanks

1. What is the make and model number of your DVD recorder?
2. What is the brand and version of the DVD recording software installed?

XP can not natively write to DVD. You need third party software to do this.
Nero works very well but if you want a freeware alternative that is
excellent try this http://www.cdburnerxp.se/
