I recently *because I couldn't wait* bought a whole new computer system. More specifically, I bought the parts.

I bought an 8800 640mb gts, and now i am seeing all these threads for 8800gt 512mb.

Which is better? I specifically bought evga in case i needed to step to a different card, but what is the difference between them? enough to change?

any information would be apreciated.

The 8800 GT is better. However, the difference is not that much. In some games at some resolutions the 640MB of the GTS will help it a lot.
I suggest you look at the benchmarks and decide. Google "8800 GT review". Tweaktown, FiringSquad, Anandtech, Tom's Hardware have some good reviews, for example.

How much time do you still have until your step-up period ends? I would wait until close to the last day. With a little luck, you will be able to step-up to the new version of the 8800 GTS. That one is supposed to come out soon and beat the 8800 GT. It's all rumors, unfortunately, for now.

yeah, but the difference between the GT and the GTX is slim enough as is. I wonder why they would keep the GTS 640 at all.

I got the card... I believe around 10-9-07.... so with 90 days that puts me at 01-09-07.

so I do have some time, but when they do the step up, dont they take the CURRENT price of the 640 and subtract that from whatever im stepping up to? if so.... that could suck, as the new gts may bring down the 640s price a bit. :(

The current price of the old version of the GTS does not matter at all.
Let's say you paid $400 for your GTS. Let's say the new version of the GTS comes up at $350 and it's faster than your old version. The way the step-up works is, you pay $13 or whatever for shipping, do NOT get $50 back, that's about it. I think the new card will cost less than what you paid for the GTS, so you won't have to pay anything except shipping. If the new card shows up at $450, you pay $13 shipping and $50 difference. Again, the only variable is the price of the new card. The current price of your old card doesn't matter.

well thats good at least... and yeah.... paid i think 375 for it. wanted to get a 2900pro but it was not in stock and i had all the other parts and needed a video card to run it. So i went evga just in case.

Either way, i love the card. I can play 2 different games at once *not that its physically possible* like a MMO i play on one side and a FPS on the other while waiting for a group.... 120ish FPS on the UT3 demo when im supplying the 20 or so bots... Its great.

Buuuuut, if i could step up to a more powerful card for little or not much more money... why not :)

Wow! Are you doing this on two separate monitors or just one?

People thought I was crazy when I said I wanted to play a game and watch a DVD at the same time, each on its own monitor. Ever tried that? It doesn't work for me with PowerDVD but I've been told it might work with other players.

I think what you're doing is even more interesting [:turpit:2]

yeah, I actually use my TV for the videos/movies and use my monitor for the games. I put my MMO game to windowed and push it over to the tv so I can see if I get any private msgs for group, and I will play the other on my monitor... or vice versa if I want to play one of the 2 and watch games or movies.

I don't know if it SHOULD run that nice, but it does. I have 2 gigs of the 6400ram, 500gb 16mb cache SATA HD, and one external of the same, a E6750 dual core, and the 640mb GTS...... Either way, I love my setup and all, but like I said if something better is out *the gt* or coming out *possible 640 upgrade* just trying to cover my bases :)

Cool! Yeah, it should run that nice, it's a great rig.

Good thing you didn't get the 2900Pro. The 8800GT beats it.

What DVD player are you using? I have an 8800 GTX, so I guess whatever works for you should solve my problem too.
