How to diagnose and fix Windows Vista crash on laptop

I have a Compaq Presario CQ50, and sometimes when I am using it the system crashes with a black screen. The only way to recover is with a reboot using a button on the laptop (not via software of course).

On boot-up I'm presented with a screen asking if I wanted to start Windows in safe mode or continue normally. I always select to start normally.

After the system started I looked at the Event Viewer and saw the following message:

The previous system shutdown at 8:06:43 PM on 5/1/2011 was unexpected.

I keep Windows Vista recent by running Windows Update usually every time I login, and almost always keep the AC adapter plugged into the outlet.

How can I troubleshoot this problem? I have yet to run hardware tests, but plan on doing that soon (using a linux livecd).

You can Insert Windows Installation CD in to CD-ROM and Choose Option "Repair your Computer"

and do this all things.
