Hi,

I know this thread is kind of about laptops, but it's more about CPU's, so I posted it here. Hope that's fine.

Regarding processors in laptops, 1.9ghz CPU's is sufficient for me as a web developer for this time, but I wonder if that will be worthy of programs in 3-5 years? Or should I just take a 1.9ghz laptop now and consider buying a new laptop in 3-4 years?

Thanks,
Shad

Buy what you can afford now. The "deals" are about $600. Of couse that wouldn't be a gaming notebook. Forget about those minor clock speed bumps. That's where a lot of the markup is in processors. Make sure you have/get enough ram. Buy a notebook with a solid chipset.

Hardly any laptop on the market will be viable in 5 years... not even the $4000 ones that burn your legs and cause your back to ache. I think $1000-$1500 is the sweet spot for laptops right now... and I think it's reasonable to expect those machines to last for 2-3 years. I think you'll be fine as long as the processor you're looking at has two (or more) cores, you get a decent GPU and at least 2 GB of RAM. I don't own it, but NewEgg had an absolutely smashing Toshiba for $1499... packing a C2D processor, an 8700 GT video setup, 17 inch screen, 2 GB of RAM and a RAID 0 hard drive array. For sub-$1500 laptops... it just doesn't get any better than that.
