Properly Apply Thermal Compound

First, I wish there was a sticky on this. If there is, and I'm in the wrong section... please let me know.

So... what is the perferred method? I've read lots of different ways. Artic says to apply in a thin line side to side and then apply the HS.

My HS just generically says to apply the compound.

I read an article that says to put a dab in the middle, then spread using a razor blade or your finger wrapped in Saran Wrap.

So I suppose the question is To Spread or Not to Spread.

And if the answer is spread... then following what method?

Some people likes to spread it. I don't, I'm too lazy.

Since I have a Q6600, I do this:

I spread until it's transparent with MX-2 and a razor blade.
