Forum Graphics & Displays : Graphics Cards x1950 XTX, do I stay or do I go?

Hey,

I got a x1950xtx ATI (non-master) that's feeling kind of lonely in my case. And not being very knowledgable on graphics cards these days , I was wondering if I should simply cross-fire, or if I should evict the 1950 for something newer and better? Crysis is the mistress in this situation and I would appreciate any advice.

Im running a intel dual e6400 at 2.7 on PW5 DH deluxe. Screen res up to 1920 X 1200. And have the power supply to feed the crossfire.

It been awhile, so am I might sound like a numb nuts. Does anyone recommend swapping out the processor instead of the card?

I guess a price range would be helpful huh? I'd go up to $400, if it was worth the extra cash over the 200-300 for the 1950xtx master edition.

I won't bother with a second 1950.

Just get a 8800 GT, or in 2 weeks a HD 3000 series radeon if the price/performance/power usage is compariable.

at 200-300 you mention a new generation card will be much better.

I agree with Medoza.

Invest in a new generation card if you want to upgrade

Right now, the two (high end) price points to beat are

~$230 to $270 or so, 8800GT
~$460 to $540 or so, 8800GT SLI

Though, I think that if you have the option of CrossFire with your current Mobo, SLI isn't an option. Rumors suggest that the new ATI card is cheaper and lower performing than the new 8800GT, so you might want to wait for it to see what reviews are like. That way the $400 CF options might be available.

Wait for the HD 3800. It should be out about the same week as Crysis. At 1920x1200 with all the eye candy maxed you will need two 8800 GTX cards or two HD 3800 cards.

Or you could just turn down some settings, keep your XTX, and play at 1280x1024. We'll see when the game is actually available.

A CPU upgrade would be good too, if Crysis is your main priority. Crysis will work better on a Q6600 than on a E6850, according to the guys who developed it.

I say stick with your XTX and cPU and wait till next year for the next generation of stuff.

Even a 8800GT/GTX wont b able to play crysis at 1920x1200 at full.

You could upgrade your CPU to some prevail, but still not worth £150.

Both componets are still fairly high-endish in my book.

You'd be lucky to find another X1950XTX anywhere for a good price, let alone the CF edition.

Wait for the new ATI card out on nov 15th then take your pick from that or the 8800GT then e-bay the 1950xtx and get most of your money back :)

Sweet, thanks for the advice!

If you went with a new card though, just to let you know, go with an 8800GT once its down below $250. Right now its selling at a big markup, but Nvidia originally stated it would sell for as low as $200, and a factory overclocked edition for $230.

That is, unless you wait for ATI 3800. Thats a different story thats already been said.

Yeah I would wait. I'm thinking about upgrading ny X1900XT sometime next year.

The X1950XTX is still a pretty good card if you ask me, just not at 1920x1200... Hell the only setup I'd recommend for that is SLI/Crossfire setups. If you can get a decent price for it then sell it and get a 8800GT, if not then keep it.

You could probably get a 3870 for 199$$ when it comes out (speculation). or 2 of them for 400 or 4 of them for 800. plus the FX790 of course.

Difference in these cards is only the factory OC right?
By fantastik250, 57 minutes ago:

I should say that is the only difference.
