if the hard drive is new and never has been formated before it's better if you do the full format the first time around. anyother time i do a quick format and everthing is just fine.
A full format will detect any bad sectors or other issues with the drive, so if the drive is DOA you should know before going through all the headaches.
Quick format will just write the partition table.
