Platform error

hi,

i was having trouble installing anti virus programs, i tried avast free and bt netprotect without luck, so after an hour on the phone bt helpline told me it was a 'platform error' and to contact a computer repair firm.
any ideas on what they meant by 'platform error' and how to fix it?
