Problems with wireless

Hello,
I have a 3G iPhone. When I am near my laptop, I get a WiFi signal, when I walk out of the room, It goes back to 3G. I have called the iphone people, my cable company and Apple. They all say it is a router problem, I have a SMC router. Any suggestions? thanks
