I just bought a new PC today, but when I got it home and started plugging it all in, I started getting an error. The monitor (LG226 WTQ-SF) wasn't displaying anything and the POST was beep-ing 1 long and 3 shorts.

After adjusting the cables a bit (I'm not sure which cable was the problem, I think I re-adjusted all of them or checked if they're well plugged) my PC worked. I managed to install everything, drivers and all. I reset a couple of times, no problems whatsoever. But when I shut it off, there I was again...no display, 1 long and 3 short beeps. Can anyone help me out? Is it the DVI cable between the monitor and the video card? is it the video card itself? I think the monitor is out of the question, because it worked great before, but now it's just not getting signal. Here are my components (they're all brand new and I didn't mess around with them before - they also worked fine in the store when the guys over there tested out the system for me):

Monitor - LG226 WTQ-SF (22" wide screen, 2ms)
GC - ASUS 8800 GTS 320 MB
DVI Cable going from monitor to one of the 8800's two jacks. I'm not sure exactly how the jack is called, it has 18 pins placed in two squares of 9 pins and a horizontal wider pin.

If you look at this picture (http://attachments.techguy.org/att [...] dvicon.gif), the 8800 jack is DVI-D Dual Link and the cable connecting it to the monitor is DVI-D Single Link. Could that be the cause?

Thanks in advance for your help.

I twinkered around with the DVI cable and when moving it into a certain position, the monitor fired up! But again, when I reset it it didn't work. Does this mean it's the cable's fault? Or the DVI jack on the graphics card?

Video card problem. Did you plug in the PCI-E power to the back of the card? Is it seated properly? Is your PSU beefy enough for that card?

The PSU is an Antec 500W Earthwatts. I'm not running excessive stuff, just a DVD RW, Q6600, two hard drives and the 8800GTS. Is there any risk involved with resetting the CMOS? I don't have a lot of experience in this and I'm a bit in the dark.

P.S. Video Card is working just fine, fan firing up, PCI-E connector from PSU plugged in properly and the card is seated properly in the slot. Besides, when I get the right position on the DVI cable, there's absolutely no problem with the card, I've ran UT2004 and Oblivion as a test with max settings and I had high framerates and no errors.

I to have that problem, it only works in a certain angle. Just buy a new DVI cable problem solved.

Thank you, I'm going to buy a new DVI-DVI cable tomorrow. If that doesn't work, I'm buying a gun.

I would look at your motherboard book, and check to see what the beeps mean. I would reference your mobo book and check just to be safe. You dont want to have a dead computer
