Can I do things like browse the internet and open up thunderbird to check email while I'm running small fft's on prime95?

ya, if it crashes its not stable. I kinda do that unpurpose run orthos to stress both cores with prime95 then work on website stuff or check email etc.

Sure go ahead, I play music with iTunes and surf the internet. But be prepared for crashes.

You can do that, but it slows the test down, which doesn't really matter.
