'RMA'd My XFX 6800 Ultra recently and received an 8600GT as a replacement.

Specs
6800 Ultra 512MB GDDR 3: PV-T45F-YDF2
8600 GT 256MB GDDR3: PV-T84-UDD3

I know with newer games the new card is mostly as good, but I can't see the justification in a $500 card exchanged for a barely $150 card.

Should I complain? (I will anyway :heink: ), but what do you guys think?

Hello

Your old 6800 ultra is vastly inferior to the 8800GT even with the smaller amount of memory, if we are talking game performance. Just check out the VGA charts here at tomshardwareguide, considering that the 8800GT beats both versions of 8800GTS (the 8800GT isnt in the charts). Still might be worth to complain and hope for an even better replacement, but performance wise, you got a big upgrade

Regards

torbjorn, the replacement was an 8600 not 8800 ;/

It's good from the perspective that my card is quite old, and most component manufacturers give you 12 months at best, so in that respect i'm happy that I have a replacement at all.

I looked at toms hardware guide, there isn't a direct comparison of the cards, but there are cards in the respective classes to compare. The results are mixed.

Personally I believe that an 8800 Ultra would be more appropriate - I know that's asking to much - Seriously, a good 7900 would be good though.

8600gt is a better card. The 6800 Ultra is an old card, it is no longer manufactured. I would be happy with my 8600gt seeing how a 6800ultra is no longer $500 like it was in 2004.
