Im looking at this, or for something similar: http://www.dabs.com/productview.as [...] X8#reviews

(but not that much storage, i only need the 500gb one)

basicly, im moving away from my home with my parents to a city, and i want to keep this drive at their house, and be able to backup my work at my new home across the internet and safely store it onto this drive. This is so that if i get burgled, or theirs a fire or whatever, then i will have a safe backup far away. Is this gunna work? or have i totaly misunderstood the concept?

currently im using a seagate freeagent pro, which auto-back's up any files i save, and it works real well. But i want to be able to backup the backup's, as my work is very important to me.

This will be ideal for what you require, you can access the files from any PC i believe... It is a storage server of sorts.

Triple backup? you workin on splitting atoms? whats that important?

Conceptually, the idea is good, but there are technical issues that must be addressed, the most obvious being speed.

Depending on how much data you have to backup on this drive, it might be painfully slow over the internet. To backup 1GB of data, it would take about 6 hours at 500kbps and 3 hours at 1Mbps. What will be your connection speed and your parent's (u/l and d/l)?

hmmm, im not too sure on the connection speed when i move there, it will probably just be average...as for my parents, its 8mb aol, but i dont know the specifics. As for my work, im into Music producion, I use my pc and software mostley. I guess initialy i would have everything on the free-agent backed up, which i could just do with both drives plugged into the pc. Then, it would only be backing up very small files, each time i saved the song i was working on.. so im thinking this wouldnt be a problem at all. we're talking between a few hundred kilobytes, to maybe a few hundred megabytes, depending on if theres recorded audio as opposed to just midi data. But either way, i don't think ill really need to backup large files. Wow, i didn't think it would be that slow to backup 1gig, however, i don't think ill need to very often. I would of liked to backup all my music and software and stuff aswell, but if it's gunna be that slow, i may aswell just stick to the music production stuff, after the initial backup of everything

Sometimes the connection speed is different for inbound (download) and outbound (upload), you will have to know. For example, here in Montreal, Videotron's 7Mbps (~850 KB/s) service in "only" 820 kbps (~100 KB/s) outbound.

If you backup very often and backup only the files that were modified (incremental backup), the size of the backups will stay smaller and speed might be less of an issue. For the initial backup, you better do it with the device directly connected, you will save tons of time.

The comments on Dabs' site don't look too positive about this unit. I agree with the principal of what you are trying to do - just remember that you will need to setup DDNS and some firewall holes etc. While I shouldn't mention BT you may want to consider BT Digital Vault (http://www.productsandservices.bt. [...] d=CON-3291) as an option.

UD.

ps - have a look a Scan.co.uk so far I've been very happy with them so far, that may change if I don't get my Logitech G25 today :ouch:

pps - I've also been pushing QNap <--- maybe I should buy shares in both companies :pt1cable:
