Looking for some advice from some folks much more knowledgeable than
me on
T.V.'s. Here is what I am trying to find out info on.
Fixing to have to buy my parents a new TV. Was looking today and now
I am
totally confused. They are not big TV buffs, Will watch a movie once
or
twice a month. My mother enjoys a good picture when she does watch tv.
They
have no surround sound system so would like something that sounds
decent but
does not have to be audiofile type of sound.
My main thing is Dependability. I do not want to have to get someone
to go
over to their house and help me load the thing up to have it
repaired.
Not sure whether to get the HDTV thing or not. I do not know when
everything
is supposed to change over to HDTV. Don't want to have to buy another
TV in
a couple of years because the TV won't pick up anything. Don't need
anything
over 30" in size.
I found a philips at Sams today that is a 30" HDTV. The model number
is
30pw8420/37 for $599.87 I did a search today on that model number and
came
up with nothing, I did find it on philips site, but that is the only
place I
have found it. IT seems like a good price, but found some stuff that
did not
sound to favorable about the dependability of Philips, Not sure if it
was
good info though.
Any suggestion on brand, Whether HDTV or not would be greatly
appreciated.
Thanks in advance folks.

When you buy a HDTV, make sure it has both good hardware
reliability & good software (picture Processing) guts!!

These items do not come free, they do make for a fine HDTV set.

If you are looking for a very nice 30" (tube) CRT set,
consider the Sony 30HS420 unit ($900 to $950)...
It is short Picture in Picture... but has the good WEGA
picture processing software & longevity.

Sure like my 32" 4:3 Sanyo HDTV from Walmart for about $650 (30" 16:9
same price) I have only an antenna and this set has both analog and DTV
tuners.

The Phillips 30pw8420/37 Does not have a Digital Tuner and will have to be
upgraded in the next year of so, if they turn off Analog TV.

External HDTV Tuners start at $200. If you are using HD Cable or
HD Satellite then you don't need the tuner.

Analog TV is still scheduled for cutoff next year, anyone want to bet on
when congress will extend that deadline?

If it were me I would make sure the TV set has the Digital HD Tuner built in.
Unfortunately even less than 2 years from the deadline not many small sets
have the tuner built in.

Looking at Sams Club I see nothing below 42" and $2500 that is a real
HDTV. Lots of inexpensive HD Ready sets.
