Inquiring about Dual Socket MoBos

is it possible to have two non-identical model processors?

for example, i want to purchase only one xeon e5410 for my dual socket MoBo. is it possible to leave the other socket empty? if not, can i just stick some older lga771 chip in?

You can have one slot empty yes... designed for scalibility... although im not sure on the same CPU thing, but my logically answer woould be yes it has to be the same cpu
