I've put together a new system and getting a 3Dmark06 of 12,615. I'm guessing I'll be able to get >13k when I OC some more (haven't touched GPU).

Looking at comparisons on futuremark, I've noticed that some "similar" systems are getting insane marks of 15k, 16k, 17k+. But on every one I've checked, they've each been running Directx 9.0c (I'm running 10) and using old Nvidia drivers (for example, 6.14.11.6902 vs my 7.15.11.6925).

Is either/both of these better for 3dmark?

It's primarily Vista.

Drops 1-2k easily.

That looks about right for your current system specs. Overclocking the GPU won't help all that much.....

Just for reference though, my system:

6750@3.6GHz
8800 GT @ 675
4 GB Dominator 1066
Vista x64

I also wound up at around 12800. You may barely break 13k, but not by much.

BTW 3dMark 06 doesn't employ DirectX 10 in any of it's tests. It's all DX9.0c driven.

On my system using the latest drivers the gap between Vista and XP has closed considerably..

Vista is now only around 500 3d mark 06 points behind xp now.. is getting there but XP is still best.

If you are looking for benchmark numbers, stick with XP/DX9.

I wonder about the SP3 for XP.

I highly doubt that an XP SP3 is going to happen.

I read an article in pczone or pcformat (can't remember which) a month or so ago from a games developer about testing Vista SP1 and XP SP3... he stated that at the time Vista SP1 gave a 2-3% increase in performance, while XP SP3 gave a 10% increase.. This would push XP even further ahead of Vista.. which is interesting..

What makes you say that?
