Any threats with Prime95 overnight?

I've read many places that to ensure full stability you need to run Prime95 for 8+ hours.

I'm not worried about heat because in the ~3 hours I did run Prime95, my max was 49c. My concern is that so far, when I've been too aggressive, the machine has completely locked up.

If my machine locks up 10 minutes into a Prime95 and then runs for another 6-8 hours, do I need to be concerned about any kind of damage?

If it's locking up you need to find out what is going on. Something isn't right and running Prime95 is not going to help.

Odds are it's unstable. Work on that first.

I believe it was that my vcore was too low. I was getting the lockups at ~3.8GHz. I've since raised vcore and have now run @ 4GHz (Prime95, games, etc) without a problem.

From what you've said, can I assume that IF it's going to lockup, it will likely (not certainly, just likely) do so fairly quickly. In other words, no lockup in hours 1-3 Prime95, probably none in hours 4-8+?

Thanks

If you think you fixed the issue then run Prime95 all night. Just supervise the first hour or so.

Is there anyway to get Prime95 to make a BEEP sound or something that will catch your attention when a core falls offline. I hate leaving my computer for 2 or 3 hours only to come back and find a core dropped after 20 mins of testing. Wasted time. Thanks!

Prime95 seems to release the core if one of the worker threads tanks, so the temperatures drop and there is no worries on damaging anything.

I have had Orthos hang and the temperatures stayed high. Still not hot enough to cause damage though.

As stated, make sure your system cuts out before you get to the point of damaging the cpu.
