AVI foreign language movies with separate subtitle file.(how

I just downloaded Ghost in the Shell from Manga Entertainment, and I noticed that there are no subtitles but a file came with the .avi movie called gits.SUB. I am guessing that these are the subtitles which I am missing but Windows Media and WinDVD can't seem to let me tell them to use them. Does anyone know a program(or a way to use the progs i have) that reads and displays .sub files so I can figure out what they are saying in the film? I'll tell you where to download the movie if you can help; it has really nice artistic visuals (Anime) and reasonable sound, so if you know please tell.
