quick stupid question

he there people, I was just wondering about ram. I am currently buying a supercomputer for gaming reasons (yes, I know, people say never spend too much on a computer, but still, what did i do........ )

the computer that I am buying is built with:

Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9650 Quad Core S775 3.0GHz 1333MHz FSB 45nm Yorkfield Core 12MB Cache
ASUS SKT-775 STRIKER EXTREME S/L 1333FSB motherboard
MS WINDOWS XP PROFESSIONAL x64 64-BIT windows thingymajig
ANTEC FULL CASE NINE HUNDRED BLK
ASUS 768MB NVIDIA GeForce 8800 ULTRA 2xDVI PCI-E SLI

now, the main issue is that it comes with some of these ram sticks, the description says:


'GEIL 8GB DDR2 800 CL5.0 QUAD CHANNEL BLACK DRAGON RET' 4 x 2GB Memory Sticks

it has a latency timing of 5.0 5-5-5-15

however, if I search on the internet, I can get ram that has a latency timing of 4-4-4-12, which I know is faster

I am thinking of upgrading the ram, but I just want to ask you first, is there any real point, as in would it make any real noticable difference to my gaming or should I just keep the geil 8gb ram. price is not an issue as I have......ahem....'aquired' alot of money recently

You don't need 8GB. In XP you don't even need 4GB

its just for in case I upgrade to vista 64 bit. its an obsured amount I know, but it was on special 'discount' (perhaps there is something wrong with it )

Sounds like you really wanna upgrade. I've never dealt with 8GB of ram, but would certainly help. Don't even know if Vista 64 bit can use all 8GB.

I am now worried that 8gb ram might be too much, would it have any real effect on my computer?

If you have 4GB on 32 bit. I will slow down the timing, thus the performance maybe the same thing 64 bit and 8GB. I truly don't know

oh well, I will see what happens when I rip out one of the sticks, then perhaps get some faster ram
