Hi guys,

I just made this system:

Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 rev 1- BIOS F13o,
Intel DCore E2180,
Radeon X1950Pro,
2x1gb Kingston DDR2,
Casecom 500W,
Seagate NL35.2 250gb

-all in all cost about 170 quid

Anyhow, I bought this Mobo/cpu combo on the understanding it was good for OCing. Well.....

If I change the FSB in the Bios to anythinpg above 230 x 10 it just doesn't register with CPUz. I've disabled stepsetting EIST in the Bios and CIE. Still no change. I upped the vcore to 1.475, PCIe 100, PCI 33, set the memory at 1:1 4092 x 4092.
I can Overclock up to 2.35ghz using Easytune 5 which is supplied with the Mobo.
At anything above that it freezes and then the dreaded blue screen.

Ok,

So I've started again, this time gradually overclocking the fsB and upping the vcore to match it so it boots properly.

Some of the times I've raised the FSB it has booted but no visuals have come through to my monitor, it's then gone through to XP but the XP load music plays really slowly and draggily so I presume that means it hasn't got enough power.

Then I up the VCORE and when I've upped it enough it boots. However, When I go back into BIOS from this boot it has disabled CPU Host Clock Control and gone back to 200x10 I'm finding this strange as it won't boot at high FSB if the power is low, but then when I up the power and it does boot properly it resets the FSB anyway!??

Also I'm a bit worried cos the Vcore is really high now - I can boot at 3.05ghz vcore = 1.58125V. Do you think there's a problem with my PSU?

I'd say you got a bad CPU, but you may want to try this:

Reduce your ram voltages to 1.8 or so. Set it to 1:1.

1.58V is above Intel's "absolute maximum" threshold 1.55V, above which they say damage to the CPU will result.
Don't use the Windows EasyTune5 for overclocking as it will just cause problems. Make any changes only in the BIOS.
Find out the VID voltage for your chip using CoreTemp (it's on the display page near the bottom). Then, add about 0.075V to that voltage, and manually set the CPU voltage to that sum. Also, make sure your RAM speed is unlinked from the FSB speed, so the RAM speed does not increase as you increase the FSB speed. Leaving the RAM linked so it ends up running too fast is a frequent error causing OCing problems.
Remember that you are using a relatively old motherboard, so it's likely not as good for OCing the e2xxx as something like a GA-P35-DS3L.

I have an E2160 on GA P965 DS3 rev2.0 running stable @3G (333x9) on stock voltages. Try to reflash your BIOS to the last non-beta BIOS (F12, I think)) and reduce the memory speed. With BIOS F13o I have also problems.

i second the bios change. i have this board and finally found a bios that was stable so i don't mess with it. just remember that if you get an unsuccessful OC with this board it will reset itself to the default bios settings.
