Im looking to build a 4 drive raid 5 setup but I have a few questions.

Has anyone out there ever used this RAID controller, PROMISE SATA300 TX4 PCI SATA II Controller Card? Im not looking for blistering performance, I just need 1 TB+ storage that will safely store my videos, family pics, EI stuff I dont want to lose. Any other suggestions? It absolutely must have PCI interface. The PC that this is going into doesnt have PCI Xpress.

Is it possible to move the array from PC to PC? At some point in time the PC Im putting this into will be phased out, and the array will be moved into a new/different PC.

I plan on using 4 Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3500630AS 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drives. Any better/cheaper solutions out there for HDs? Id like to be at 1.5 TB or better for storage space.

Lets say I lose a drive next year, and I cant get a direct replacement, EI I have to put a newer Seagate 500 GB HD in, will it cause any major issues? What happens if I throw a WD drive in the mix, so I would have 3 Seagates and 1 WD?

Thanks for the input.

PCI itself is going to be phased out eventually so while you can move the riad from one pc to another the new machine will have to have a pci interface. If your not looking for performance perhaps a raid capable nas would do be a better investment or go ahead and build a new system with pci-e.

Toms hardware does a good right up on heterogeous raid arrays. it doesn't seem like it would be a problem if you had to replace the drive with a newer version

Yeah I know PCI will eventually get phased out. But the next stop for this array will be in my current PC, which has plenty of PCI slots, once I phase this server out. That should get me in the neighborhood of 5 years of life. Thats why its so important for me to be able to move the array.
