I havnt used Vista for a while because of the driver error using nvidia cards in it. "your video driver has stopped respondign and has recovered succesfully" error. Did they fix that yet?
I was getting this error after a reboot from installing some windows updates.
I think there was an optional update that I accidentally checked for installation that was some sort of video driver from Microsoft for my 8800 GTS. It overlapped 169.02 and that's when I started getting the error.
You should be fine on Vista if you download 169.02 or 169.04 ForceWare.
Again, I'm not completely positive if that's the cause of the error, but all I had to do to fix this error was download 169.04.
I was using 169.04, rolled back to 169.02. Crysis demo crashed with 04. Demo fine with 02 (for me anyway).
