I am upgrading my girlfriend's ancient super-compact Fujitsu P2110. Thing must be 7 years old now. I've maxed out on RAM already, also bought a new battery. Now I am about to install a new hard drive.
I want to buy the best 120 GB PATA hard drive for THIS laptop. I am limited by some 137 IDE controller/BIOS limit.
Failing that, I have heard that Hitachi and Seagate once made the best IDE 2.5 inch notebook drives. Is that still true? I guess I never considered Samsung before, but now that they are making fast HDs, are they reliable? Any links to PATA drive performance charts? Is there a database that addresses this question?
NOTE>>>My lappy is limited by its BIOS/Chipset/IDE controller of UDMA4.
If I get a newer 5400 RPM speed demon like the Samsung HM121HC won't it slow down to UDMA4 speeds? And these faster 5400 PATA drives, am I correct in that it is only the bigger drives that are fast due to the bigger platter? I can only get/only need 120 GB drive so is there one out there for me?
Won't the 7200 drives probably will be too hot or noisy in my ultra-compact museum-peice laptop?
I am wondering if I am to choose bwtween the ol' reliables...IF so, which of these 3 HDs do you prefer on this ancient ultraportable and why?
Definitely get a 5400 RPM. The old laptop is not designed to properly cool a 7200 RPM drive.
The Hitachi Travelstar is probably the lowest power dissipation drive you've listed, followed closely by the Seagate.

thanks!
but is there something better than these for my old old OLD laptop?
I've heard good things about a Samsung of all brands....the Samsung Spinpoint M 120GB HM121HC is blazing fast (so I am told).
However, I really don't know enough to say that it would run too fast on a laptop with UDMA4 speeds.
