Hello,
I bought a new external hard drive and I need some free software to copy my internal hdd to the external every week or so. Now not the whole hdd but just certain folders. (ex. my documents)
Is there a free program I can download and use for this or do I need/have to buy something like Norton Ghost etc?

For My Documents, drag and drop. For entire HD backup including OS Acronis True Image 11 is one of the better programs out there.

You can try syncback. It will do all that and can be scheduled to run, and it's free.

Or you can use the Microsoft's SyncToy addon for windows. It's free too:
