Ok I'm going to come into a wee bit of cash mid december, will have around £1500 to buy a new machine (sorely needing upgraded)

My question is regarding gfx cards, should I buy the best going at this time, or will there be anything released jan/feb that would be next GEN enough to warrant a further 4-6 weeks wait?

I do realise you can never fully keep up, but if there is something in the wings that will substantionly be superior to the current crop I'd like to wait :)

Of course if I was to wait on next gen all the time I'd never upgrade :)

I should have added I have an 8800 GTS 640 model, had it nearly a year, just wondered if anything significantly better was in the wings..

What rig do you have if you sorely need upgrade and have 8800 GTS 640?

I would say wait few weeks and get Penryn:
E5420 2.50 GHz 80W 12MB ~$316
2 x 8800GT
Nice MB with SLI
4GB fast memory
Fast HDD, or stripe.

Pretty much the best rig for your money this year.

oops, i forgot , he had a 8800GTS 640, i though he doesnt have and wants to buy a new card, definitely keep your 8800GTS 640, do u have any problems with it ? is there a game that it cant max out ? 8800GT and GTX are better, but they are not a wise upgrade over a 8800GTS 640 unless u wont pay alot for them

Currently I have

8800 GTS 640mb
2 gig kingston PC3200
Athlon 4600X2
360 gig SATA HDD
22" widescreen LCD monitor

I guess I'm upgrading more because I can safely spent 1500 quid

I have no idea why you are upgrading...............

with those specs you're better off holding for about a year or so

For lord's sakes wait on the new video cards .... it's just plain stupid for you or anyone telling you to spend hundreds of dollars on the current generation of video cards ! The next Gen will be faster .... run alot cooler .... not suck your power supply low by using huge power requirements .... and fully Directx 10.1 ! And to top it off ATI is producing a dual gpu card that will be like using 2 video cards ... but only 1 slot and one card more effeciantly ! I have'nt seen where the quads " CPU's " are anywhere near going the extra bucks for for performance ... has'nt panned out ... and going 64 bit vista is'nt helping at all . Although you'll need 32 bit Vista to take advantage of ANY directx 10 or directx 10.1 capabilities ... XP will give you none and will be wasting any effort to achieve any . XP's days are over for ANY of the new games or programs as there are not and never will be any way to use DX10-10.1 with that OS . :bounce:

I just thought after a year+ of the 88xx series going live something new & substantially better would have been out or on the horizon by now, guess we have ATI to blame for this :)
