I had a cat that used to watch SDTV a bit, but only if there were animals
one it. The only way I even got the dog to look at it was by videotaping
her in one of her barking bouts and then playing it back to her. THAT got
her attention, but more from the sound than the picture. Of course dogs
are far less visual than cats, being mostly guided by smell. If you could
come up with a TV that gave off the odour of lions, I'm sure dogs would go
nuts over it. :-)

Our dog watches TV when there are dogs in it. He especially likes agility
events.
He only watches HD shows, though.

Of our 3 dogs, only one is visually-oriented enough to ever pay any
attention to TV. Likes animal shows, of course, and, to a lesser extent,
basketball. Once, during a nature show about indigenous people in Africa, a
hunter threw a spear that traveled off-screen. The dog ran into the kitchen
to look for the spear.

Our cat generally ignores the TV. But one night there was a show with
wolves. She went over to the screen and tried to touch one.

Dumb kitty!

In the early 70s, there was a Sylvania TV commercial in which a cat
charged toward a canary on a TV. Even back then, the picture was good
enough to fool a cat. And in the early 90s, Hitachi did a commercial
in which cats stared at a TV with a picture of fish as intently as
another group of cats were staring at an aquarium.

My cat watches his dvd of the cat video I bought him. He will fall asleep
when the aquarium portion with the fish swimming around comes on but will
wake up quickly and watch intensely when the squirrels and the mice portion
starts. But he has to be sitting on a pile of laundry for him to be even
interested in looking at the tv.

My cat loved Michael Jordan in Space Jam. She would stare at the screen
during the whole movie and try to touch Michael when he was on.

I certainly hope none of your pets are watching if ever "they" do a
documentary on lamp posts, fire hydrants or trees.

I haven't found many dogs that will watch TV. Some cats do. MANY rabbits do.

I think that dogs don't because they lack color receptors in their eyes. Cats
see all colors and rabbits see blues and greens (they lack red receptors but
see reds as black/white).

I've had cats in most of my life, but until last year, I've never seen a cat
watch television. In 2004, my wife and I adopted my mom's 7 year old Seal
Point Siamese. This cat is great on many levels and is hours of
entertainment and affection. And every now and then, this cat will watch
SDTV on a 27" in our bedroom or HDTV on our 65" in the family room. The
other day we watch a VHS tape from the library on the Olympics and Mt.
Rainer. The cat was on the couch and got suddenly very interested when they
showed birds, wild cats, and raccoons on the big RPTV. We were laughing our
heads off.

She hasn't attacked the TV yet. Here catnip infused scratching post is in
front of the TV too.

I've also seen her watch people occassionally on the big screen. It's
funny.

My dog barks when there's a dog on TV. I think it's more the Surround Sound
than the picture. Once a dog was just walking by and I think he heard its
tag making a clinking sound. My dog started howling like it was a full
moon.
