I am looking to buy components for a new gaming pc; I have a maximum of £1,300 to spend.

While looking at CPU's I noticed a 3GHz quad core costs £500+ but a 3GHz dual core cost £70 and a single core 3GHz single core costs £25.

I thought to myself: wouldn't it be more cost effective just to buy a motherboard that supports more than one CPU and get 2 dual cores or 4 single cores but I couldn't find any multi CPU motherboards which aren't stupidly expensive or are suitable for the other components.

That’s where you guys come in... Are there any motherboards with features up there with the nForce 680s but have multiple CPU slots and are not over £300, or am I wasting my time and should I just get one CPU??

Never got to that idea myself...wow man... :)
For now you`ll be fine with 3Ghz dual core.... with x38 board you`ll be able to upgrade to penryn quad when they get cheap...

Just get one CPU. I don't know where you're from, but here in the US a quad core costs $266, that is crazy cheap. A multi-socket board alone will usually run 1.5-2x that, then you still have to get the processors.

Those multi-socket boards also generally use FB-DIMMS or registered memory, which is very slow for gaming and other desktop usage.

Pound is from England and i think he's talking about QX6850 which cost around $900.
But get what jt001 said. Get the Q6600 for 266$ (+/- 130£), Overclock it to 3GHz and you get the QX6850.

P35 supports Penryn and 1333MHZ CPUs too

Motherboard for more than 1 CPU are normally for server class. Yes they are more expensive (smaller production, different chipset). Like stated, the Q6600 is quite a deal of the century! :)
