Hi Jim,

First.. is your computer a desktop computer or a notebook or netbook?
Secondly. Do you want to add a monitor so you can view more than one application at a time, or to duplicate what you are seeing on the existing monitor?

If your computer is a desktop computer, then you can add another video adapter into the system unit to connect the extra monitor to. Then in Display Properties you can configure how that new monitor will behave in Windows XP.

If you have a notebook, then you likely already have a built-in external monitor port and can connect an external monitor to this port. The 'Fn' key on your keyboard pressed in combination with one of your function keys along the top row of your keyboard will toggle between the notebook displaying output on the laptop screen or the external monitor or displayed on both. The function key at the top is typically F5 (it should have an icon of a laptop and a rectangle on it). Press these two keys at the same time.

Not sure if this answers your question completely without knowing the purpose of the external monitor. Let me know details if this does not solve your issue.
