Had a spare Sata II WD 250gb HDD laying around, connected it all up, started up the computer, and bios isn't picking it up, infact nothing is.

Short system summary, ABIT NF-M2S, WD Sata II hdd, tried fiddling around, googling, racking peoples brains.

If anyone has a suggetion, please say :)

Try a different data cable. Check in BIOS that the SATA port is enabled and set to AUTO.

Have you tried WDC website or tech support. I was having the same kind of problem and I had to put a jumper on pins 1 & 2. Click on link
