Hi all-

First time poster, please be kind. :)

I recently put together an Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe (sli-570 chipset) with an Athlon64 5000+ Black Edition. My memory is Crucial PC-1066. I've been having some odd stability issues with it.

With a completely refreshed install of WinXP, i had the machine running at 3GHz on a 250MHz fsb with memory at 500MHz. All last night this was stable, and i played Team Fortress 2 maxed out without problem. Very nice.

I left the machine on all night. This morning, the screen was blank, and it wouldn't respond. Reset button, nothing. I had to power off the machine to get it to reboot. I checked mail, fine. I tried to open task manager and got an error- something file was missing and it could use it. I rebooted, and now it said it couldn't find a system file. I tried to boot off the WinXP cd to do a repair install, and during that start up it again said it couldn't find a particular file, and had to close.

In the end, i had to power down the power supply, unplug the sata cable to the hard drive, and take my system down to specs to get it to reboot. And it seemed fine- the files it said were lost apparently are not.

My question is- what the heck is going on? How can it be completely stable for 4+ hours of gaming, and then conk out the next morning after checking email? How can it say files are missing but then boot up properly?

Any ideas? Thanks!

ah, the beauty of windows! im going to say something got crashed out while idle and didnt want to recover unless everything was stock spec. i have problems with my mobo, it will not run 2.3v on ram, but ram can handle it. i back it down to 2.2 and it works...odd. i love technology. im sorry if this didnt help, but computers are finicky. tell you what is even MORE finicky....unix os puters and when you have to stop-a and its an old box...and telecommunications circuits running 1980's technology...gotta love the military!!

I'm not a big computer guy but I'v been looking at that MOBO.for my first build. from what I can tell it's very picky on what memory you use-
look on newegg reviews under that board see what ram they use.Or
go on Asus.com download mem QVL for board.

like I said I will be using that same board and CPU on my first build
please keer me up to date.

Well, i'm still having issues. The system is at defaults, no overclocking at all. It'll run for a period of time just fine, playing Team Fortress for hours at a time. I go to bed, next morning it's at the bios test screen saying it has a memory failure. I have to completely power down (via power supply) to get it to load to Windows again after that, sometimes after a couple of BSODs during boot, but it will get there, and it'll start all over.

I was not aware that the M2N-SLI Deluxe was picky about memory. Where did you get that? I have Crucial Ballistix 1066 (which is Micron), but don't know if it matches the module numbers you have listed. I'll have to look it up when i get home from work.

Does Asus's 590 board have the same issue? Maybe i should just swap the mainboard.

Sorry for what? Asus M2N-SLI, it is an AM2 motherboard.

As an update, i've done two things. First, i updated the mainboard drivers with ones from nVidia, not the ones on the Asus driver disk. Second, i'm now using Corsair CM2X1024-6400C4 memory. Between those two things, it seems to have stabilized. I'm not sure which is more responsible, but i'm not complaining.

I've even got it overclocked now. It's running at 12x250 = 3.0 GHz and memory at 500MHz, 5-5-5-18. It's been running constantly for about 4 days now, including some heavy gaming sessions. I think i can get 3.125 GHz out of it, but that increases the memory divider and drops memory speed to 450 of so. Not sure which is better.

Anyways, don't know if anyone is still reading, since i didn't get many replies, but that's the story...
