Unexpected error

Hello,Windows keeps turning off my active desktop due to an unexpected error. When I click Restore Active Desktop a script error message comes up. All 3 of the troubleshooting suggestions do not pertain to me, about adding a Web page to my desktop, the only thing that brings back my normal desktop is- right click, click on 'properties' then when desktop window comes up simply click on OK. Then everything is back to normal, but why is this happening several times a day?

What the hell is the event viewer and how do I check it?

The event viewer is where the system and applications log errors.
start-->control panel-->administrative tools-->event viewer

Errors will have a red x on them, and have a time of when they occured. You can double click on them to read the details.
