Would I see improvement?

Right now I'm running an AMD 2600+, 2gigs of ram & a sapphire 9600xt. I would like to upgrade my video card to a Nvidia 7600gt. Would I see a significant change for improvement?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

More about would improvement
  1. very slight. cpu will bottleneck the crap out of it
  2. Yes, absolutely.

I would also look at the ATI HD2600XT as it can be found a bit cheaper than most AGP 7600GTs.
  3. Hmmm... I'm trying to run team fortress 2 & I get about 18 - 20 fps with my radeon 9600xt. I was hoping to get more from the 7600gt. Would I see much improvement from the 15 - 20 fps? Thanks for your help!
  4. They guys talking about bottlenecking are full of it (to an extent).

I went from a ATI 9800PRO to a MSI/Nvidia 6600GT and the 6600GT rans circles around the 9800PRO and I didn't change a thing in my machine other than the video card (AMD 2100+ @ 1.8 and 1.75 gigs of crappy DDR400 RAM).

I can understand how a high end card might be bottlenecked on certain CPU intensive games, but a better card will be a better card period. YOu'll get better framerates and better resolutions on better cards. YOu might get stuck at 30-40 fps, but those 30-40 fps will look damn good.
  5. Go for the 7600GT
Be sure to get the GDRR3 and not the GDRR2 though.

    I would agree with this.
Also i would agree to some extent with what OOOwatah said, yes it is to some extent a waste if you care that some fps are going begging because the cpu cant keep up but it will look good.
I would worry that it may be just too big of a bottleneck though.
Any chance of upgrading the cpu if you try the card and are unhappy with the result?

  7. seems that my mother board an ecs 741gx-m will only accept up to a 2800+.... wish I could get a 3200+ working in it...
  8. One list of suported processors up to 3000+ apparantly which will team with a 7600gt very nicely indeed. :D

  9. I'd be better off upgrading my motherboard, & processor. Prices on 3000+ are up there.
  10. Your 2600+ still has some gaming legs. A 7600 GT will show you HUGE gains over an 9600 XT.

Certian newer CPU heavy titles like Supreme Commander or maybe Crysis will be bottlenecked a bit by your CPU, but Team Fortress should get a pretty huge boost.
  11. What's your resolution? I'm going to assume around 1280x1024, and if so, a 7600GT or HD 2600XT would both be good choices, and I'd pick whichever was cheaper, as they're in the same bracket of DX9 performance.

At that resolution, your processor should be fine...it can feed the data to the graphics cards at pace with framerates. Go above that, you'll be gpu-bound. Below that, you'll be cpu-bound.
  12. Thank you all for the attentive replies! Right now I'm running 1024 x 768. The HD 2600XT is defiantly the cheaper of the two. Do you know if I can run a standard VGA monitor with that card? I couldn't find much info off newegg.
  13. I ordered the 2600xt. I will post & let you guys know how things turn out. Thank you!!!
  14. You made a wise choice. The HD2600XT will totally spank the 7600GT. It's downfall is fsaa performance. Priced about the same in AGP, the HD2600XT is a far better buy though. And compared to your 9600XT, the increase will be HUGE!

Team Fortress 2 the HD2600XT beats the 7600GT's bigger brother (7900GS)

    ??????????????????? 7600GT very slight over a 9600XT?

You need to read this review using a XP2500+. A 9600XT is far behind a 9700 pro (even struggles vs. a 9500 pro) and look what the higher end AGP cards can do to the 9700 pro on a XP2500+.

BTW, look at all the games, not just Fear.

Sorry bud, but I'm just not seeing that. I think you need to fix something. ;)
  17. Got my card today, no improvement what so ever. I had to force the omega drivers to get it to work. Any suggestions???

    LOL, will do. ;)

Dump the Omega Drivers, run a driver cleaner, install the latest Catalyst drivers from ATI, and start turning on some bells and whistles in your games.
