Is it worth it to get the REV 2 of the OCZ XTC Plat?

Hi there,

I picked up 4GB of OCZ Platinum XTC (OCZ2P8002GK) yesterday for a total of $60.00 Canadian..
Now, I came accross the REV 2 (OCZ2P800R22GK)of basically the same memory, with a bit lower latency. I could get 4GB of that for $90 Canadian..

What would you do?

The First operates at:
CL 5-4-4-15
2.1 Volts
240 Pin DIMM

The REV2 operates at:
CL 4-4-4-15
800 MHz
1.9 - 2.0 Volts
240 Pin DIMM

Is it worth that extra $30?

Well considering that even $90 US is a good price for 4GB I'd say that it could very well be worth it. The timings are a bit faster which is nice but probably won't make that big of a difference in real world performance. BUT the big thing I see is that the Rev2 is spec'ed at lower voltage meaning that it should run cooler at stock and probably have more overclocking headroom.

Generally all the rev. 2 OCZ ram is an improvement in performance over the rev.1. I would say it would probably be worth it. I have owned several sticks of OCZ over the years, and rev.2 usually overclock better. OCZ, Corsair, and Micron are my favorites.

Any other opinions/thoughts? I need to make my mind up for tomorrow morning so I can return the other set =)

Hi nX07,
I paid $325 (CDN) for 2x1GB of the Platinum XTC Rev2 last August (~15 months ago).
It worked okay, but the heatspreaders are terrible - they curl and bow away from the chips, they're like tinfoil.
Then the RAM went bad, well actually my rig went bad. :fou: I briefly went crazy because I didn't suspect the RAM at first; so expensive, lifetime guarantee etc... But it was the RAM. :ouch:
Coupla sticks of Corsair fixed me right up.
OCZ was very difficult with me on the warranty, and made everything as hard as they could.
But damn, that's pretty cheap now! Wouldn't be so bad...
