I have been reading for 2 hours and found no answer for my question. I check the Buyer's Guide but i'm still not sure..
I have a AMD Athlon 64 3800+ Single Core stock @ 2.4Ghz but i overclocked @ 2.6Ghz
Is it worth it to upgrade to 4400+ X2 stock @ 2.2Ghz? is it a good overclocker?
In Vista, it's run like slow compare to xp and im wondering if it's because of cpu.
I just use my pc for games.
For around $70 (for 4200+, same speed smaller cache), I think it would definitely improve performance. Most games take advantage of multiple cores, now. It *shouldn't* be your graphics card that is limiting performace, and I've heard many times that even high end processors can bottleneck a 8800gtx. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6819103053
The question would be if you would be better off spending the money elsewhere. No upgrade for $70 will get you as far, but you might rather consider upgrading to an am2 mobo which would have significantly better upgrade options, and processors at 65nm for the same price. anandtech just posted a story on budget builds, and they mention that there are decent mobo for under $50, and significantly better after rebates. Edit: ok, those seem to be for IGP chipsets, but the "gaming" chipset is all of $90 or so. I think it all boils down to what you want your upgrade path to look like.
I have a X2 4400+ with an ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe mobo with Zalman 9500 heatsink and I can get an overclock of 2860 mhz. A better heatsink might allow a higher overclock, but might not. Depends on the individual SPU. I've read of a few people breaking 2900 mhz with the 4400+. The 4200+ is basically the same chip, but with a smaller cache, so it should be able to overclock similarly. Newegg has a 4200+ for $70 right now. I haven't seen a 4400+ for awhile, but if you find one at a similar price, it is worthwhile.
Either the 4200+ or the 4400+ will be a big step up from your single core 3800+, especially when you multitask. There are a fair amount of people who discount the 939 series because its old, but its still capable. It should be kept in mind that an AM2 CPU will only be a small amount faster when like CPUs are compared. Yes, an AM2 5000+ Black Edition will be faster, then you have the expense of a new CPU, a new mobo, and new ram, all at a time when AMD is about to introduce the Phenom series. Unless the prices are very high for a Phenom setup, it would be better to wait for that instead of getting an AM2 with a 5000+ BE.
Back to your original question as to whether the upgrade to a 4400+, or a 4200+ is worth it, I think the answer is yes. Unless you have $500 to $1000 to spend on a complete upgrade, then the best thing to do is wait a couple weeks and see how the Phenom performs, then choose between it and an Intel powered machine.

thanks all for your good recommendations...
for sure i wanna to upgrade to AM2 but for now i just got 200$ to spend... by next spring, i'll upgrade for sure and get another 8800GTX so i can put those babies in SLI woohoo
It's not all slow... only newer game but for sure it'll become slower and slower... but games like STALKER, FEAR, UT3, R6 Vegas, HL2 plays really well with no lag and at least 75fps @ 1280x1024 with everything max out. Vista is really the concerne here... cause i can clearly see that it slower than xp... its probably normal but it just bother me
Now i found a 4400+ x2 Toledo Core for around 150$ CND on ebay with shipping included, and its not a bet, its a sale. so i think im gonna go with that.. next spring, i'll sell my mb, CPU and ram to get me a AM2 board, new cpu and for sure, 4gb of ram DDR2 800 or 1066... depending what's gonna be available at that time.
Now with the Canadian money worth more than US money... if it stay that way, i will surely save alot of money and i'll get monster components
Thanks again.
PS: Sailer got my point of view, dont wanna spend now on everything like cpu, board and ram. Cause just for the board, i plan to spend at least 250$ CND, cpu wil be newest as possible and i want 4gb of ram DDR2 800 or DDR3 if its available. I know alot of peoples will say 2gb is enough but i wanna 4 at least
