I just got this "Special Report" email from Tom's about the new 5-series Adaptec cards. Tom's shilling for Adaptec putting an ad in a "newsletter."
Quote :
"Ideal for enterprise-class storage systems that call for maximum performance, the next-generation Adaptec Unified Serialâ„¢ Series 5 family of RAID controllers outshines the best offerings from 3ware, LSI, Areca, ATTO, and Promise by up to 5X in speed tests."
Obvious marketing hype about speed. So, I played along and watched the flash comparison. The curious part was when I played along trying different combos in the performance "dashboard," I couldn't find any configuration where the new Adaptec card was faster than the 3-Ware card, in any RAID type. I didn't try all of them, but in each of the one's I tried, the 3Ware won. I couldn't believe it, Adaptec is touting how fast their card was when it was getting beaten in every test by a competitor.
Having a marketing degree (and playing with RAID at work), I find that insane. Adaptec... let me get this straight... your *BRAND NEW* cards gets beaten in many of your own benchmarks by a one year old card. And you still tout speed? Are we in the twilight zone? For goodness sake, say you're quieter, say you're more reliable, say you're cheaper, say your card will cook me breakfast, but don't say you're faster, then have YOU'RE OWN BENCHMARKS prove the competing card is!
Am I going crazy? Have any of you gotten this email too?
