I have a 2004 Dell Inspiron XPS laptop with a Intel Northwood 3.4GHz cpu (512mb cache), 800mhz FSB on a Dell P/N C2291 motherboard using an Intel 865PE chipset. (CN-0C2291-12961-47M-3893 Rev. A03) I read rumors that the chipset has a bios upgrade that can support a dual-core cpu, namely the Intel D805 2.66GHz. Does anyone know if this is true?
I haven't found any info on the actual manufacturer of the C2291. There is some confusion as to whether this is a socket 775 or 475. Manual doesn't say, only gives the chipset info. One site suggested a few alternate cpus for the 865PE, including dual-core. Cannot find any significant info on older Inspiron XPS, only reviews in 2K4. Everything's geared for current version of XPS Gen 2+.
My obvious goal is to see if I can upgrade to a dual core cpu using the motherboard I already have.
Intel Northwood are socket 478 while Intel D805 2.66GHZ are socket 775. They are different socket and you can't install socket 775 processor into socket 478 mainboard.
Thanks,
There is a 2.0GHz Intel Core DUO T2500 667MHz 2MB Socket-478 BX80539T2500. However, I do not know if the chipset would support it. The CPU runs about $200 to $300. There's also a BX80537T7600 Processor ( mobile ) - 1 x Intel Core 2 Duo T7600 / 2.33 GHz ( 667 MHz ) 478-pin for about $600 - $800.
Any idea if either of these models could work with the Intel 865PE chipset?
