Will there be any Intel price cuts soon because of the new Penryns?

I guess it really depends on how Phenom actually performs in the real world.

If AMD can get Phenom clocks up, Intel may firesale the "old" 65 nanometer quads to undercut from below, and then crank the Penny parts to 3.4, 3.6, maybe 3.8 ghz to hold the high ground.

As I understand it however consumer 45 nano quads will not show up till January of 08, so I guess we will all have to make due with $270 Q6600 quads till then...

It's not like the Q6600 is exactly a bad deal at +/- $270 after all....

Q6600 stays at $266. In January it gets replaced with a 2.5Ghz/1333 FSB with 6MB L2 cache Yorkfield at the same $266 price point. Intel isn't dropping quad prices below $266, at least for the short term.

Yeah, the launch articles seem to hint that the desktop versions of Penryn won't be available until 45 days from today. That basically means the start of the year. If you're looking for a Christmas present, the C2D's and C2Q's are probably the best.

Where did you hear that ? I heard that they wouldn't be out until Q2 of next year.

Don't wait for the price cuts. Chances are not likely unless AMD pulls something out of their a$$. Just look at the current pricing with e6550 and the old e6600 and go check up on their performances. The new Penryn's will replace the current Conroe's, but the price will more or less remain the same.

Price cuts will happen. Then always do.

But they Q6600 has run tables on the big price cuts that Intel has performed on other chip series over the years. $266 is the current price. A 10% price cut is a big $26. Waiting 6 months or more for that 10% savings is just not worth the wait. And at that point the Penryn's will be coming down in price, so why in Hades would anybody jump up and down and buy the Q6600?

I doubt you'll see much of a drop, if any. The Q6600 is fabbed at 65nm, so I doubt Intel has as much room to play with the pricing as it will with the 45nm Penryns.
